Located just an hour southwest of Sydney, this expansive heritage site brings rail history to life with an impressive collection of vintage locomotives and carriages. Families can wander through interactive exhibits, explore a historic roundhouse, and see firsthand how the railways shaped the country. The atmosphere is open and welcoming, offering plenty of room for little explorers to roam. The real highlight for many is the chance to board a heritage train. These 40-minute journeys depart from the authentic 1880s station precinct on weekends and during school holidays. For those who love a bit of nostalgia, the museum also hosts iconic events like Day Out With Thomas and the Thirlmere Festival of Steam. Beyond the tracks, there is plenty of space to relax. With over 10,000 square metres of lawn, it is easy to settle in for a long afternoon of play and exploration. The site is thoughtfully designed for families, ensuring a smooth experience from arrival to departure. Some of the heritage train rides and exhibits cannot allow prams or non-folding wheelchairs onboard.
